I giggled, my whole body shaking with every laugh. "I'm not sure, but even so, I'll follow you around, no matter what!"

"That's fine with me." I rubbed her back gently and then went back to eating my sandwich. My heart was racing a little for some unknown reason.

I leaned into him and took another bite of my sandwich. "I love you so very much!!! And I pray all of your classes go so very well!"

"I appreciate that, but so far so good! My next teacher isn't as boring and tiring as the last one so I should be able to make it through." I raked my fingers through her hair.

"Oh, that's great! When do I need to pick you up?" I sighed happily and chewed another bite of my sandwich. I loved it when he'd play with my hair.

"I want to say four... we'll go home and then I have to go out again for a few minutes..." I paused there thinking about what I wanted to do.

I wasn't sure it was a good idea.

I tapped my fingers on the table and shrunk into the chair, "Promise not to be angry with me if I tell?" I asked.

"Uhm... y-yeah..." I was a little on guard now. What was he going to say...? D: "What is it?"

"I thought it might be a good time to... try and talk to my dad..." I paused there a little, I didn't want to hear her reaction, I was worried she would be angry with me for making this decision. It took a lot of time and thinking to make it. Her main concern may be around the fact that it could ruin the end of an already perfect birthday.

"W-What?" I stared up at him, shocked. "Uhm... w-what if he tries to hurt you again? Z-Zack..." I shook my head. It would be good for them to make up, but I didn't want Zack to get hurt again. "I'm not gonna stop you, b-but be careful!"

I wrapped my arm around her and then tilted my head down to lean it against her shoulder. Sometimes even I needed comfort and this was one of those times.

"Please tell me I'm not crazy for trying this, Katie..." I whispered, lacing my fingers through hers.

"How badly can he harm me? He's behind bars..." I gave her a weary smile but I tried to make it seem more confident and reassuring.

"Words can hurt just as bad, sweetie." I hugged him tight. "Don't take them to heart. He's just a very angry man..."

Words were powerful, it was because of those harsh, uncaring and heartless words that I had striven to become a better person than he claimed I was. I was a smart person, a loving man and had a beautiful girlfriend. It was because of him that I bettered myself but only to prove him wrong.

"I won't." I said with a long sigh.

"Good!" I sighed though, still unsure about this being a good idea. I was all about trying to make amends with people, but I always had a bad feeling about his father. "Mario and I will be at home waiting for you when you get back anyway, with your present!"

I gave her a kiss and then sat up straight, "Thank you, Kat... I love you." I kissed her again and again and then went back to eating because people were starting to stare.

Not that it mattered though.

I'm sure I was a bright red, as my face was super hot. "I love you too! Just... don't keep me waiting too long!" I smiled. Two meaning associated with that. I doubted he'd understand more than one.

I had a headache that night when I came home, a pounding headache and a silent wish that I'd just kept my mouth shut and not even faced him. He looked a lot older than the last time I saw him, gray hairs and wrinkles all over. He'd aged and it wasn't even graceful, it looked forced.

I swiped out my key and stuck it in the knob, hands shaking and stomach churning. We'd argued, my own voice calm and sincere and his voice, as always, enraged.

It had always been my fault that Mom died.

I watched the knob turn slowly stood with a big grin, holding a little cupcake with a single candle in the shape of a saxophone. When he stepped through the door, I immediately shouted, "Happy bir-" The massive grin I'd been wearing to welcome him quickly faded when I saw his expression. "Z-Zack...?" I looked down at the little cupcake in my hands and set it on the table we used for our keys and wrung my hands nervously. "Are you okay...?"

I brightened when I saw her with the cupcake and tried to keep that smile even when she asked if I was okay. "Oh! Yeah, it's just been a very exhausting day, I'm fine. Is that for me?" I quickly changed the subject and looked at the cupcake. A sax... I loved this woman so much.

"Thank you, baby..." I kissed her lovingly, "I love it!"

I brightened a little at that. "Y-You do...?" I looked up at him, still nervous. Why was he looking so unhappy when he first got in? And why was he smiling now? So confusing! "I-I was hoping you wouldn't think it was too cheesy like Amanda said you would..."

"Amanda can take a hike, her take on cheesy and my take on cheesy are two different things." I blew out the candle and made a wish but I wouldn't tell her what it was, not now anyway.

"Are you up for a walk in the park tonight while I eat my cupcake?" I asked.

"Um..." I glanced back in the kitchen where his present was, but it'd still be there when we would get back. "Sure!" I smiled sweetly. "You made did make a wish though... right?"
