"For not being there when the wizard hurt you..." Amoneha frowned, "I feel bad for that, I'm not sure... I should have been there."

"Ah, but you came anyway... and you saved me. I feel as though I am forever in your debt. Whenever you came to visit me... it was like... all of the pain on my body just washed away." Adder smiled an almost loving smile, and took her hand in his. "You're very good at comforting."

"I never knew that until I met you..." Amoneha laid down a little, "Can you hold my hand a little bit...?"

Adder had her hand in his in an instant. "I thought you would never ask!" He grinned to her, his slightly swollen face and cuts covered his face, but he seemed fairly happy.

Amoneha looked down and almost began to cry, "I can't feel it..." She stammered.

Adder frowned a slight and reached his free hand up to brush her hair away from her face. "Hush... it's alright." He smiled then and pulled her into a soft, short kiss. "It'll come back. I love you... just give it time." He was really trying to comfort her, though he admittedly hadn't ever really been good at it. He squeezed her hand a bit tighter.

"Love?" Amoneha asked in surprise, she gasped and blinked hard when she remembered what he'd said when she was saving his life... he loved her. "Love..." It sounded extremely strange rolling off of her tongue. "Hm..."

"Are you upset?" Adder asked cautiously, trying not to sound as nervous as he was. "I'm sorry if it was a bad time to say it..."

"No... I'm not upset, I just need to think..." Amoneha didn't move to go or anything, she stayed there with his hand still wrapped around hers. "I'm sorry... don't worry."

Adder nodded slowly and turned his head to stare at the ceiling. He was worried... worried that she wouldn't return his feelings... and also a little worried that she would. He knew King Steven loved her... he loved her more than anything, but Adder did too... and he didn't want to hand her over without trying. "If you don't feel the same way, it's really alright... nothing really has to change between us... we can stay good friends."

Amoneha nodded slowly, "It's not that... I'm just thinking..." She blinked numbly and then looked back at him, "How long?"

"I don't know... I guess... since sometime during that trip when I brought you back from that kingdom. I've been trying to hide it without hiding it so you wouldn't think I was hiding something horrible from you."

"I never tried to catch on..." Amoneha sighed, "I've always trusted you so even if you were hiding anything, I never thought..." She felt this strange pain in her stomach, like a pinch that wasn't so much physical as it was emotional. "Why does it hurt...? I don't understand."

"I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you." Adder frowned a bit in concern. "A-Are you alright?"

"I'm alright..." Amoneha still made no attempt to move, "I just don't know what to say at all... I wish I could say something..."

"Well... you don't have to say anything then." Adder offered her a gentle smile. "I didn't really expect a response just yet anyway. Take your time to decide." Their peace was interrupted when Kynen staggered in, chuckling with a funny grin on his face, his arm wrapped around the waist of a pretty young lady.

"Sorry to interrupt, but this is Rina... and she really wanted to meet the two of you!" He grinned big and Added nodded slowly, a bit in shock.

"Ah, hi there... it's... uh... nice to meet you!" He smiled kindly. "Kynen, is this the girl that was always bringing you apples in the dungeon?"

"It's nice to meet you, Rina..." Amoneha, even if she'd wanted to reply, couldn't right then because it wasn't good enough timing. She stood up and let go, almost forgetting their contact. "I hope Kynen is treating you well."

"Oh he is!" Rina giggled, "He's wonderful, I think I'm in love!"

Kynen's eyes widened a bit at her words, but then he grinned even bigger and kissed her cheek. "I don't think, I know I'm definitely in love! It's not something you really have to think about, you know?!"

Adder felt a pang of sadness in his chest, though he still nodded with a fairly genuine smile. "Y-Yeah, I guess so. I'm happy for you guys."

Rina gasped, "Oh my goodness!! I love you too!!" She kissed him back.

Amoneha laughed a little, "Congrats... I'm going to rest for a while. I'll visit again soon, Adder." She smiled sympathetically and then made her way out of the room. Rest? No... she needed to cry alone.

"Did... we interrupt?" Rina asked.

Adder sighed almost inaudibly... but he really wanted to scream. He was so angry and upset... and sad. Was it really so hard for her to decide how she felt?

'She'll never love you!' The words from the wizard echoed in Adder's mind. He knew the wizard had only said it to upset him... but it felt so true at that moment. He'd only ever truly be a friend to her.

"No... you didn't interrupt anything." Adder replied softly, failing to hide his disappointment after Amon had left.

Kynen frowned a little bit. "You sure? Amon looked pretty upset."

"I don't know, you're her brother and guard, aren't you? Maybe you should follow her." Adder growled in minor irritation.

"Ah... hint taken!" Kynen nodded quickly. "Well, it was nice seeing you! Bye!!" And then, they were gone... finally.

Adder sighed heavily and warm tears streaked down the side of his face, into his hairline. "I'm so stupid..." He whispered. "So, so stupid."

Amoneha stared at her reflection in the mirror, her eyes were wide with shock and her tears were covering her cheeks and dripping off onto her numb hands.

"I love you."

What in kingdom's name...? How was she to respond to such words. It was sudden and she was used to their relationship... it was normal, friends were friends, right? How could she ever love... even if she did deep down. How could she reply? Was it really as easy as Kynen and Rina made it look? They didn't even talk about how they felt, they just... said it. A gasp escaped and she clutched her chest, her heart was hurting. Slowly, Amoneha sunk to the floor and began to cry. How could she just abandon him again? Why was it so easy?

"How can he love someone like me... who's heart is made of stone...?"

Adder continued to stare blankly at the ceiling. He was tired of the castle already, and wanted to be home. Maybe it was best if he did go home. Home... home was home, and comfortable. Home was quiet, and you didn't get bothered by noisy guards or healers changing your bandages when you're trying to sleep. He pushed himself up to a sitting position and sent up a quiet prayer that he could walk. He didn't want to pressure Amon by being there all of the time. He could wait for her no whether he was home or not. He swung his legs off of the bed and pushed himself up to a standing position. He sniffed some and wiped his eyes, his legs hurt a bit, but it wasn't too bad. He pulled on a pair of breeches and a tunic, then limped out the door.

"Sir?" A guard seemed rather surprised to see Adder up and walking. "Wh-Where are you going?"

"Home." Adder smiled a bit. "I'm going home to make myself some beef stew. If Amon asks where I am, you can tell her that. She shouldn't have trouble finding me there." He then made his way to the entrance of the castle on his way home.

"He left?" Amoneha asked the guard at the post. "I'll go see him."

"Are you sure, M'Lady? The city is still in an uproar over the latest wizard sightings..."

"I don't care." She smiled coyly and walked away, still using her cane. She still couldn't reply to his I love you, but she could visit and make sure he was well.

Adder dropped the beef he'd bought on the way into the pot of water beside himself. He'd kissed her... like an idiot, he'd actually kissed her... and not once, but twice. He'd also kissed her when he was bringing her back to the castle. He sighed heavily, and shook his head. "I'm such an idiot. I push myself on her, then expect her to reply the way I want her to? Or even at all? Why should she reply?" He tossed the vegetables in next and wiped his eyes. He stared at his hands which were trembling. His body hadn't had enough time to heal, yet he didn't seem to care. He needed to do something.

Amoneha, without knocking, walked into his house and shut the door behind her, "Are you crazy?" She began, "How could you suddenly be back on your feet after all of that? Here, let me do that." She took over his space and continued where he'd left off with ease. "How foolish can you really be?" She smirked.
